Shadows

Light is the essence of photography. When light encounters an object, shadows are born. These images explore the patterns formed by cast shadows on the human body, as light and shadow caress the shapes of the human form, revealing and sometimes obscuring its contours. Shadows may cast their patterns on both the figure and the background, forming a composition of light that includes the model. The nature of a shadow invokes an aspect of the model’s humanity—hard, linear shadows from venetian blinds or architectural elements trumpet the strength and resiliency of the body, while the gentle and organic shadows of nature expose its delicacy and fragility.
